Developmental Milestones

Note the age when your baby has achieved the things listed here.

IMPORTANT: If you have any concerns that these milestones are delayed, or you have concerns related to the Health Watch signs, discuss them with your health care professional.
  • 0-4 WEEKS

    Skill or Milestone


    • Moves head side to side when lying on stomach.
    • Head flops backward if unsupported
    • Eyes wander and occasionally cross
    • Recognizes some sounds; may turn toward familiar sounds and voices

    HEALTH WATCH

    (Notify your Paediatrician if these signs are present)


    • Sucks poorly & feeds slowly
    • Doesn’t blink when shown a bright light; or focus on a nearby object
    • Rarely moves arms and legs, seems stiff
    • Seems excessively loose in the limbs, or floppy
    • Doesn’t respond to loud sounds
    • Lower jaw trembles constantly, even when not crying or excited"
  • 4-8 WEEKS

    Skill or Milestone


    • Begins to smile at people
    • Can briefly calm himself (may bring hands to mouth and suck on hand)
    • Coos, makes gurgling sounds
    • Turns head toward sounds
    • Recognizes the scent of his own mother’s breast-milk
    • Can hold head up and begins to push up when lying on tummy

    HEALTH WATCH

    (Notify your Paediatrician if these signs are present)


    • Doesn’t respond to loud sounds
    • Doesn’t notice his/her hands or doesn’t bring hands to mouth
    • Doesn’t smile at the sound of the mothers voice
    • Doesn’t follow moving objects with his/her eyes
    • Can’t hold head up when pushing up on tummy
  • 2-4 MONTHS

    Skill or Milestone


    • Raises head and chest, and supports upper body with arms when lying on stomach.
    • Pushes down on legs when feet are placed on a firm surface
    • Takes swipes at dangling objects
    • Smiles at the sound of parent’s voices
    • Begins to babble, and to imitate some sounds, movements and facial expressions

    HEALTH WATCH

    • Doesn’t follow moving objects with his/her eyes
    • Doesn’t grasp and hold objects
    • Doesn’t smile at people
    • Cannot support his/her head well
    • Doesn’t reach for and grasp toys
    • Doesn’t babble
  • 4-6 MONTHS

    Skill or Milestone


    • Smiles spontaneously at people; likes to play with people; copies some movements and facial expressions.
    • Babbles with expression and copies sounds he/she hears
    • Cries in different ways to show hunger, or being tired
    • Reaches for toys with one hand; sees and reaches for toys
    • Hold head steady & unsupported
    • Can hold a toy and shake it, and swing at dangling toys
    • Responds to affection; lets you know if he/she is happy or sad
    • Follows moving things with eyes from side to side

    HEALTH WATCH

    • Doesn’t reach for and grasp toys
    • Doesn’t bring objects to his/her mouth
    • Doesn’t babble or begins babbling, but doesn’t try to imitate any of your sounds
    • Doesn’t push down with his/ her legs when his/her feet are placed on a firm surface
    • Has trouble moving one or both eyes in all directions
    • Crosses his/her eyes most of the time
    • Doesn’t pay attention to new faces, or seems very frightened
  • 6-9 MONTHS

    Skill or Milestone


    • Rolls over both ways (front to back, back to front)
    • Sits with, and then without, support of his/her hands
    • Transfers objects from hand to hand; explores with hand and mouth
    • Ability to track moving objects improves
    • Responds to own name
    • Begins to respond to “no”
    • Enjoys social play
    • Finds partially hidden object; struggles to get objects that are out of reach.

    • Doesn’t roll over in either direction (front to back or back to front)
    • Seems inconsolable at night
    • Doesn’t smile spontaneously
    • Cannot sit with help
    • Does not laugh or make squealing sounds
    • Doesn’t actively reach for objects
    • Doesn’t follow objects with both eyes at near and far ranges
    • Doesn’t bear some weight on legs
  • 9-12 MONTHS


    Skill or Milestone

    • Gets to sitting position without assistance; assumes hands-and- knees position
    • Walks holding on to furniture; stands momentarily without support; may walk 2-3 steps without support
    • Puts object into container; uses pincer grasp; bangs 2 cubes together
    • Responds to simple verbal requests; responds to “no”; babbles with inflection; says “dada” and “mama”
    • "Explores objects in different
    • ways (shaking, banging, throwing, dropping)"
    • Begins to use objects correctly (drinking from cup, brushing hair, talking on phone)
    • Enjoys imitating people in play
    • Shy or anxious with strangers: cries when mother or father leaves

    • Does not babble
    • Shows no interest in games of peek-a-boo
    • Does not crawl
    • Drags one side of body while crawling (for over one month)
    • Does not search for objects that are hidden while he/she watches
    • Says no single words (“mama” or “dada”)
    • Does not learn to use gestures, such as waving or shaking head
    • Does not point to objects or pictures
    • Loses skills he/she once had
  • 18 MONTHS

    Skill or Milestone


    • Likes to hand things to others as play
    • Plays simple pretend, such as feeding a doll
    • Points to show others something interesting
    • Says several single words
    • Says and shakes head “no”
    • Points to one body part
    • Can follow 1-step verbal commands without any gestures; for example, sits when you say “sit down”
    • Walks alone; may walk up steps and run
    • Drinks from a cup; eats with a spoon

    HEALTH WATCH

    (Notify your Paediatrician if these signs are present)


    • Doesn’t point to show things to others
    • Doesn’t know what familiar things are for, e.g. telephone, toothbrush, spoon
    • Doesn’t copy others
    • Doesn’t gain new words
    • Doesn’t have at least 6 words
    • Doesn’t notice or mind when a caregiver leaves or returns
    • Loses skills he/she once had
  • 2 YEARS

    Skill or Milestone


    • Copies others, especially adults and older children
    • "Shows more and more independence; shows defiant behavior (doing what
    • he/she has been told not to)"
    • Points to things or pictures when they are named
    • Says sentences with 2-4 words
    • Follows two-step instructions such as “pick up your shoes and put them in the closet”
    • Stands on tip-toe; kicks a ball; and begins to run
    • Climbs onto and down from furniture without help

    • Doesn’t use 2-word phrases (for example “drink milk”)
    • Doesn’t know what to do with common things like a brush, phone, spoon
    • Doesn’t copy actions and words
    • Doesn’t follow simple instructions
    • Doesn’t walk steadily
    • Loses skill he/she once had.
  • 3 YEARS

    Skill or Milestone


    • Hops and stands on 1 foot up to 5 seconds
    • Goes up and down stairs without support
    • Draws a person with 2-4 body parts
    • Draws circles and squares
    • Has mastered some basic rules of grammar; speaks in sentences of 5-6 words; tells stories
    • Correctly names some colors
    • Understands concept of counting and may know a few numbers
    • Begins to have a clearer sense of time
    • Recalls parts of a story
    • Understands the concept of same and different
    • Dresses and undresses
    • More independent

    • Cannot throw a ball overhand
    • Cannot jump in place
    • Cannot ride a tricycle
    • Cannot grasp a crayon between thumbs and fingers
    • Cannot stack four blocks
    • Still clings or cries whenever his parents leave him
    • Ignores other children
    • Doesn’t respond to people outside the family
    • Resists dressing, sleeping, using the toilet
    • Lashes out without any self- control when angry or upset
    • Cannot copy a circle
    • Doesn’t use sentences of more than 3 words
    • Doesn’t use “me” and “you” appropriately
  • 4 YEARS

    Skill or Milestone


    • tells stories
    • alternates feet when going up and down stairs
    • would rather play with other children than alone
    • plays cooperatively
    • hops and stands on one foot for up to 2 seconds
