0-4 WEEKS
Skill or Milestone
- Moves head side to side when lying on stomach.
- Head flops backward if unsupported
- Eyes wander and occasionally cross
- Recognizes some sounds; may turn toward familiar sounds and voices

- Sucks poorly & feeds slowly
- Doesn’t blink when shown a bright light; or focus on a nearby object
- Rarely moves arms and legs, seems stiff
- Seems excessively loose in the limbs, or floppy

- Lower jaw trembles constantly, even when not crying or excited"

4-8 WEEKS
Skill or Milestone
- Begins to smile at people
- Can briefly calm himself (may bring hands to mouth and suck on hand)
- Coos, makes gurgling sounds
- Turns head toward sounds
- Recognizes the scent of his own mother’s breast-milk
- Can hold head up and begins to push up when lying on tummy

- Doesn’t respond to loud sounds
- Doesn’t notice his/her hands or doesn’t bring hands to mouth
- Doesn’t smile at the sound of the mothers voice
- Doesn’t follow moving objects with his/her eyes
- Can’t hold head up when pushing up on tummy

2-4 MONTHS
Skill or Milestone
- Raises head and chest, and supports upper body with arms when lying on stomach.
- Pushes down on legs when feet are placed on a firm surface
- Takes swipes at dangling objects
- Smiles at the sound of parent’s voices
- Begins to babble, and to imitate some sounds, movements and facial expressions

- Doesn’t follow moving objects with his/her eyes
- Doesn’t grasp and hold objects
- Doesn’t smile at people
- Cannot support his/her head well
- Doesn’t reach for and grasp toys

4-6 MONTHS
Skill or Milestone
- Smiles spontaneously at people; likes to play with people; copies some movements and facial expressions.
- Babbles with expression and copies sounds he/she hears
- Cries in different ways to show hunger, or being tired
- Reaches for toys with one hand; sees and reaches for toys
- Hold head steady & unsupported
- Can hold a toy and shake it, and swing at dangling toys
- Responds to affection; lets you know if he/she is happy or sad
- Follows moving things with eyes from side to side
HEALTH WATCH

- Doesn’t reach for and grasp toys
- Doesn’t bring objects to his/her mouth
- Doesn’t babble or begins babbling, but doesn’t try to imitate any of your sounds
- Doesn’t push down with his/ her legs when his/her feet are placed on a firm surface
- Has trouble moving one or both eyes in all directions
- Crosses his/her eyes most of the time
- Doesn’t pay attention to new faces, or seems very frightened

6-9 MONTHS

- Rolls over both ways (front to back, back to front)
- Sits with, and then without, support of his/her hands
- Transfers objects from hand to hand; explores with hand and mouth
- Ability to track moving objects improves
- Responds to own name
- Begins to respond to “no”
- Enjoys social play
- Finds partially hidden object; struggles to get objects that are out of reach.

- Doesn’t bear some weight on legs

9-12 MONTHS

- Gets to sitting position without assistance; assumes hands-and- knees position
- Walks holding on to furniture; stands momentarily without support; may walk 2-3 steps without support
- Puts object into container; uses pincer grasp; bangs 2 cubes together
- Responds to simple verbal requests; responds to “no”; babbles with inflection; says “dada” and “mama”
- "Explores objects in different
- ways (shaking, banging, throwing, dropping)"
- Begins to use objects correctly (drinking from cup, brushing hair, talking on phone)
- Enjoys imitating people in play
- Shy or anxious with strangers: cries when mother or father leaves

- Loses skills he/she once had

18 MONTHS

- Likes to hand things to others as play
- Plays simple pretend, such as feeding a doll
- Points to show others something interesting
- Says several single words
- Says and shakes head “no”
- Points to one body part
- Can follow 1-step verbal commands without any gestures; for example, sits when you say “sit down”
- Walks alone; may walk up steps and run
- Drinks from a cup; eats with a spoon

- Doesn’t point to show things to others
- Doesn’t know what familiar things are for, e.g. telephone, toothbrush, spoon
- Doesn’t copy others
- Doesn’t gain new words

- Loses skills he/she once had

2 YEARS

- Copies others, especially adults and older children
- "Shows more and more independence; shows defiant behavior (doing what
- he/she has been told not to)"
- Points to things or pictures when they are named
- Says sentences with 2-4 words
- Follows two-step instructions such as “pick up your shoes and put them in the closet”
- Stands on tip-toe; kicks a ball; and begins to run
- Climbs onto and down from furniture without help
